History of St. Paul Church

St. Paul United Church of Christ traces its beginnings to the year 1854 when a pioneer German Missionary named Friedrich Schmid began conducting occasional services in the Chelsea area. He started with 5 families meeting in borrowed space or family homes. The congregation grew to 15 families by 1865, and 3 years later, became formally organized with a constitution. The cornerstone for a new church was placed and the name St. Paul was chosen. In 1869, 43 members took communion in the new church.
